gingivitis

Among the dental diseases related to periodontics we must talk about gingivitis.

Gingivitis is a type of dental disease intimately related to the abnormal inflammation of our gums. It is usually caused by the accumulation of bacterial plaque which, when it hardens, also forms what is known as dental tartar.

Its origin is always due to a lack of proper oral hygiene. That is, brushing at least a couple of times a day, flossing and rinsing with any type of dental mouthwash.

Gingivitis is a type of disease that we could call silent. It does not cause any type of discomfort in the person. The best way to identify it is because the color of the dental gum changes considerably, to a much more intense red.

Even during tooth brushing it is possible for the gums to bleed. In extreme cases of gingivitis, even when eating, the gums bleed when chewing food.

PERIODONTICS​

Periodontics is one of the specialties within the world of dentistry in charge of diagnosing, preventing and offering the best dental treatments for any type of disease related to periodontitis.

And this type of disease has a lot to do with bacterial plaque or the subsequent appearance of the dreaded dental tartar, even below our gums.

All this can be the origin of the loss of our teeth, so it is one of the dental diseases that we must pay more attention to.

CAUSES OF GINGIVITIS

First of all, it must be said that our own saliva is capable of protecting our gums, especially against any type of external aggression.

But inside our gums there are certain microorganisms that cause the dental gums to become inflamed. The greater the number of these microorganisms, the greater the inflammation of the gums.

It is here where we can say that we find the origin of periodontal disease and all its subsequent problems, which can lead to the loss of teeth.

TREATMENT FOR PERIODONTITIS​

To do this we perform specific X-rays and a deep periodontal study. With this we can measure your gums and have a basis on which to work in the best possible way. Then we perform a deep oral cleaning with which we can recover the optimal health for your own gums. It is also known as dental curettage. Different types of dental scaling are performed with a little local anesthesia. Afterwards, the client goes home with specific instructions on how to take care of his or her gums during daily dental hygiene. For this purpose, specific toothpastes are used for the gums as well as mouthwashes for gums affected by periodontitis.

Subsequently, after a couple of months, the patient is required to see the state of his gums and if it is necessary to perform more dental scaling to eliminate and, especially, prevent the possible appearance of gingivitis or periodontitis.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PERIODONTICS AND ENDODONTICS​

There are very clear differences between endodontics and periodontics. As we have mentioned before, periodontics is a kind of oral treatment against gingivitis and periodontitis. Within these treatments we can find dental curettage or the definitive elimination of all the bacterial plaque and periodontal pockets found in the patient’s mouth.
On the contrary, endodontics refers to dental diseases caused by some kind of dental trauma or some kind of infection. In order to perform an endodontic treatment, direct access is gained to the dental cavity in order to eliminate and suppress as best as possible the part of the dental pulp that has been affected. Then we proceed to seal that area in order to perfectly restore the affected area. So now you know, if your gums bleed when you brush your teeth, it is an unmistakable symptom that you have some kind of dental problem. And the best thing to do is always to treat it in time and to stop possible future problems.
